Progressive Party “#24Bells” Continues to Grow in Its Third Year!
ST. LOUIS – The plan seems simple: Toast the New Year alongside the people in each of the 24 time zones from 24 different “iconic” locations across the St. Louis region. Sound like fun? St. Louis residents Jon Beeby and David Woodruff are in their 3rd year of doing it, their adventures on social networking platforms as “#24Bells”.
“The planning seems simple until, well, there aren’t 24 time zones,” said David Woodruff, a local political strategist, “there are 38. Who knew?”
“And for some reason, we toast 24 time zones, but it takes 25 stops,” added Jon Beeby, owner of By Jack, a local merchandising company, “bizarre.”
Beeby and Woodruff don’t get too caught up in the details.
According to their public Facebook group ‘#24Bells the Global NYE Party’: “In 2017 two men had no idea what to do for their New Year’s Eve party... so instead of going to one, they celebrated the New Year for every country from the comfort of their own city. Join us each year as this ridiculous plan gets formulated and Beebs and David party for 24 hours - ringing in each New Year in each time zone in the world (kinda).”
The 2017 #24Bells Grand Tour included visits to spots St. Louisians love: City Diner, Strange Donuts, Atomic Cowboy, Venice Café and Flamingo Bowl to name a few.
“We hope to promote a love of St. Louis, and specifically, local businesses. This year, for example, we’re toasting at Bootleggin BBQ Tavern and Apotheosis Comics and Lounge,” said Woodruff. “Everyone is invited to every stop, but this year, we expect larger groups to join us for lunch at Rigazzi’s and then bocce at Italian American Bocce.”
“The activities are always fun. Our first year we went skiing – one trip down the mountain at Hidden Valley – and last year we bowled at Saratoga Lanes,” added Beeby.
The duo also focuses on iconic St. Louis stops. Previous years included The Muny, Art Hill, Anheuser Brewery, and the Arch. This year they’ll take in Missouri’s First Capitol Building in St. Charles, as well as the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park.
Jon Beeby, originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, now calls St. Louis his home. Jon – his friends call him “Beebs” - resides in a Tower Grove South flat with his girlfriend Maggie. Fun fact: Jon has walked across the United States.
David Woodruff lives in Benton Park with his wife Lea. She will only take part in “two, likely just two” of the 24 toasts - instead choosing to snuggle on her sofa with her dog and cat. “I love their New Year’s Eve tradition; I can kiss David at three in the afternoon and it counts! I’ll be in bed by nine, maybe even eight!”
Throughout the #24Bells Grand Tour, Jon and David enjoy hourly toasts, traveling between location via ride sharing, public transit, designated driver, or by walking. They urge everyone to have a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve, no matter where you celebrate.
